Role: 1st XI Coach

What is the role of the 1st XI coach?

The main purpose of the 1st XI coach is to coach and manage the best players in the club to compete in the league and cup competitions the club enters.

What are the responsibilities of the role?

To plan and run a weekly training session, normally 90 minutes on a Wednesday evening at Redbridge Sports Centre on astroturf for the players who have the potential to play 1st XI football. This should involve a group of approx 16-18 players, subject to availability. To select the team to play each Saturday afternoon. This is done in coordination with the club’s selection committee (chair, plus coach/captain from each of the clubs adult teams competing in the league). To manage the match day (normally Saturday’s) ensuring all selected players are notified, travel arrangements made as appropriate and the game is played competitively and respectfully as defined by the clubs Code of Conduct, FA Respect and AFC Spirit of Football campaigns.

When are the main activities?

Coaching session takes place on Wednesday evening, 20:30 until 22:00. Team selection meeting takes place prior to coaching, from 19:00. Matches are Saturday afternoons and the league is across London and the Home Counties, so a few away games do involve 2-3 hours of travel.

What competitions does the team compete in?

The club is affiliated to the Amateur Football Alliance, and competes in the Senior Cup competition of this County FA.

Our league football is played in the Amateur Football Combination, the largest adult football league in Europe. Our 1st XI play in Senior 1, one division below the top division. Our Reserves play one division lower. Two other cup competitions are entered, the London Old Boys Cup (effectively the league cup), and the Old Boys Cup.

What experience do I need?

Ideally you will be an FA Level 2 coach or see this as an opportunity to develop your skills towards level 2/level 3 qualification. Previous experience of working with adult team(s) would be beneficial. Have the ability to demonstrate your enthusiasm, energy and passion for the game, particularly at senior amateur level.
